How To Finish At The Rim

My alarm would go off at 6am and it would take all my willpower not to turn it off. After all, if I skipped my workout, I could reset my alarm for 7:40 and still make it to school on time. Growing 8 inches during that time made sleep even more appealing than it is today!

For most of my final three years of high school, I managed to skip the urge to get that extra sleep and head into the Prince of Wales gym. Although I knew I needed to be in the gym and had the discipline to get myself there, I was almost clueless about WHAT I needed to work on.

I’m sure my workouts were horrendous at the beginning….and still terrible even by the end of high school. I didn’t have any clue about what I should prioritize in my workouts, let alone the details of the skills I was trying to improve. Keep in mind this was the early 1990’s, before Youtube, Instagram….or even the internet. Back in those days you were lucky if you had a PE teacher who had played a little basketball in their youth to share a couple tips and tricks.

My workouts got better by the time I was playing at the UBC Thunderbirds. For the next 13 years of university and professional basketball, I wrote down every workout I did…both on the court and in the weight room. Things are dramatically different for high school students today. Everywhere you turn there’s someone with a new video teaching a new move or workout. It can be overwhelming trying to sort through it all.

Today the biggest problem is knowing who you should listen to and what you should prioritize.  It can also be difficult knowing how all the training fits together to make you a complete player.

The Split Second team has put a lot of time and effort into creating online courses that can help you know exactly what you should work on. In our brand new Rim Finishes Course, you will have 1 lesson and 2 workouts each week to help you become a great finisher at the rim. Some of the finishes you’ll do in these workouts include:

Power Lay-ups

Runners

Euro Steps

Scissor Steps

Floaters

Pull-ups

Outside-In

Reverse Lay-ups

Step-backs

By the end of the course you will have a much better idea of the different options you have and lots of practice with various finishes at the rim.  This course is highly recommended for any athlete that is serious about basketball and taking their game to the next level.
