2020 Year in Review

Although 2020 is not a year that any of us will soon forget, it’s easy to overlook the highlights and achievements in midst of the real sacrifice and suffering so many have endured.

As athletes, we have chosen to pursue excellence in a field full of problems, challenges and our own unique kind of suffering. Every time we step on the court we need to find ways to overcome problems….whether that is the taller, stronger opponent we need to match up against or it’s a shooting slump that we can’t seem to get out of.

The constant challenges we’re faced with can really suck at times. When things go poorly, emotions can run from disheartening, to demoralizing, to wanting to quit. When things go well, the emotional pendulum swings the other way to exciting, enthralling and completely motivating.

Young athletes need to learn to deal with this rollercoaster of emotions and just keep coming back day in, day out, ready to give their best. Learning these lessons of persistence, focus and resilience are musts for athletes…and some of the most important things they will take from their participation in sport.

Looked at in this light, 2020 was a real opportunity for players and basketball clubs like Split Second to test their grit and determination. Everybody loves games with the bright lights, refs, score clocks and uniforms. How many love the game enough to train in their garage on a Zoom call for a couple of months? How many are willing to follow that up with distanced training for several months, prepping for a season where nobody knows when the games will come?

I can’t say enough about how impressed we have been by our Split Second community of people. Both coaches and players have shown the flexibility and resilience to adapt to everything 2020 has thrown our way. Rather than going on about the numerous achievements and impressive stories of our athletes, we’d like to let the numbers and pictures tell the story of 2020 for us and wish you and your family a fantastic 2021!
