Born and raised in Nelson BC and equally skilled in volleyball, golf and basketball, Eric followed his passion for hoops when he joined Thompson Rivers to start his university career. Eric finished up 5 years later with life long friendships, a university degree, a National Championship with Vancouver Island University and a strong desire to help the next generation of avid basketball players find their path in life..

As a talented, multi-sport athlete growing up in Victoria BC, Kevin fell in love with basketball in late elementary school and pursued the sport with passion and persistence. A strong high school career lead to representing BC on provincial teams before earning his degree and playing 5 years at Simon Fraser and Thompson Rivers universities. Kevin was immediately scooped up as a university assistant, before joining Split Second full-time in 2016.

Novell Thomas started his post secondary playing career at Langara College and was named as a conference 1st Team All-Star. He transferred to Simon Fraser University (NAIA), where he played 3 seasons. In his senior season, SFU made its first appearance in the conference finals. Novell graduated from SFU and finished his playing career being named as an Honorable Mention All-American. He was a 2-time 1st Team All-Star, holds the single season assist record (NAIA/NCAA) and is the career assist leader (NAIA/NCAA). Novell played professionally in Europe and in the United states and at various ages represented Canada on the international stage. He was a member of the Canadian U-22 Men's National Team and the Senior Men's National Team in 2002 & 2003. In 2019, Novell was inducted into the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame (athlete category) at the Richmond Oval. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Sports Management and is a certified NCCP Basketball Coach and NCCP Learning Facilitator. He has founded various basketball clubs and community basketball organizations. Novell enjoys coaching all ages and has a ton of experience stemming from his time as a head coach at the USport and CCAA level. He has learned to look at his players as people first and is passionate about their development as people and basketball players.

Greg grew up in Kingston, Ontario, with a love of sport, particularly hockey. Getting a late start to basketball did not slow him down. Greg brought his hockey mentality to the basketball court and never looked back. After finding success at the local, provincial, and national levels in high school, Greg went on to have a successful university career at Carleton and Queen’s University. He was a three-time OUA All-Star, OUA Champion, and USports National Champion. After graduation, Greg had an eight-year professional career in France before returning to Queen’s University to coach. His coaching tenure at Queen’s included three consecutive trips to the USports national championship tournament, including a silver medal run in 2024. Greg’s coaching philosophy centres hard work, accountability, and having fun.

Born and raised in Jerusalem, Daniel led his local team until he was 15, when he understood that his height would not allow him to keep up with his passion for playing basketball. Wanting to stay in the field, He then took a Level 1 coaching certificate course in Wingate Sports College and started coaching 10 years old players, when he was just 16. Since then he has been coaching basketball for all ages and levels, including the assistant coach position for the Semi-finalist of 2005 ULEB Cup – Hapoel Jerusalem pro team. He was named coach of the year 6 times in D1 U18 National League in Israel and went through two of the best Programs for basketball coaches in the world – Fibe Europe Coaching Certificate (FECC), and International Coaching Apprenticeship in Basketball (ICAB) led by University of Delaware and the US Olympic Committee. Alongside his coaching career, he kept his academic record, gaining a BA in Psychology and Education, and a master's degree in education leadership. He served as the CEO and Professional Development Director for Hapoel Jerusalem Basketball Club – Youth Program for the last couple of years. He came to Vancouver With his wife and three kids after visiting the split-second organization, and finding it the perfect fit for him to meet new challenges.

Growing up in a military family, basketball was a constant in Courtney's life and helped him build community and connections. Finally settling in Virginia, he got the coaching bug during his freshman year of high school after balancing his own season with being the assistant coach for the area middle school team. While continuing to play and coach, he understood the role basketball can play in teaching skills on and off the court. A career in education spanning over a decade led Courtney to England, South Africa and Brooklyn, New York with basketball being a helpful tool and relationship builder in each place. Now living in Vancouver, he is excited to help players grow in their skill and love of the game.

Grabbing inspiration growing up watching Magic Johnson play, plus learning the game from the legendary Delta coach Dunc Anderson, gave Navi a strong start in basketball...and he never slowed down. His ability to shoot, slash and lead the break helped Navi become the top scorer in Canada at the University of Calgary and have success playing in Europe. Navi works as a firefighter and is passionate about teaching the next generation about the importance of teamwork, humility and hard work.

Toni grew up in Vancouver, where she started playing basketball at a young age. She spent countless hours on the courts at Strathcona, where she met lifelong mentors who shaped her journey. However, an ACL injury sidelined her for a couple of years, testing her resilience. With the support of her coaches and friends, she focused on rehabilitation and eventually returned to the game she loved, playing college basketball at Langara. Now a teacher, Toni continues to play in the Strathcona Basketball League and local summer tournaments, staying connected to her roots. She is dedicated to inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams and demonstrates that setbacks can lead to comebacks. Through her experiences, she aims to instill values of perseverance, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude in the next generation of players.

Growing up in Vancouver at a time with few basketball training or mentorship opportunities, it took Eric until the middle of high school to find his path. Through struggle and growth, Eric learned the necessity of hard work, resilience and persistence on his way to earning his degree while playing 5 years for the UBC T-Birds. After 8 years playing professionally in Europe, Eric and his wife Lesley returned to Vancouver to raise their 3 children and start Split Second to mentor the next generation of athletes.

Born and raised in Istanbul (Turkey), Renda began his basketball career at the age of 8 playing in one of the most established and well-known clubs in European basketball. Playing through all the youth ranks in Darüşşafaka Basketball for 8 years and another 2 years at FMV Işık Spor, he established himself as one of the top 40 players of his generation and represented his clubs in Turkish National Team camps. Two unfortunate spontaneous pneumothorax surgeries halted his playing career but led him into finding his life purpose which is to mentor the next generation of basketball players in their own journeys through any similar adversities they might face and coach them to their full potential. After moving to Canada, he completed his BA degree at UBC in psychology and sociology. Now he is very excited to combine his personal basketball experience and the knowledge he gained from his degree, to grow as an advanced coach within the Split Second family.

Being an undersized guard for his entire basketball career was a challenge, however, Luka did not let this stop him from finding love and passion for the sport of basketball. Through his strong work ethic, Luka developed valuable leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Using these traits, Luka was able to achieve his long-term goal of playing at the USPORTS level for the University of Ottawa. After playing 2 years for the Gee-Gees, Luka had returned to his hometown of Vancouver, BC to play for the Langara Falcons. Luka is transitioning from a player to a coach and he is enthusiastic and eager to mentor younger players and share his extensive basketball knowledge.

Tevis became passionate about basketball at a young age as it taught him discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. He played for Basketball BC and captained his high school team in the Comox Valley before shifting his focus to the arts after graduating. His love of movement led him to become a certified personal trainer, and in that capacity he has had a decade of experience coaching functional movement. Tevis firmly believes that sport and fitness are not just about physical health and performance, but also mental and emotional well-being. His coaching style emphasizes building a fun, safe and skill focused learning environment for his players while helping them develop a growth mindset that will serve them well beyond their basketball careers

Tony's passion for basketball began at a young age, with early experiences also exploring soccer and golf. Throughout high school, his dedication for basketball continued to grow, committing hours daily to the great game he knew and loved. His coaching journey started unexpectedly when he was asked to substitute in as an assistant coach for a high school team. This experience revealed a new found passion in sharing valuable insights and guiding young athletes to their full potential. Tony continues to coach and mentor at his former high school, in addition to coaching young prospects at Split Second. Currently, Tony is studying his Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Physiology at Simon Fraser University

Growing up in Serbia, where basketball is woven into everyday life, Lazar developed a natural passion for the sport, influenced by his family and community. He began playing organized basketball at age nine with a local club and advanced through the youth teams of KK Sloga in Pozega. By 14, he was competing on the men’s team in Serbia’s 3rd division while also playing for his age group teams. Balancing practices with two teams with high school, Lazar earned a scholarship from Northern New Mexico College upon graduation, moving to the U.S. to compete in the NAIA and study engineering. In his fourth year, he shifted his focus fully to engineering, pausing his active participation in basketball. Lazar started coaching with Split Second in 2023, soon after moving to Vancouver. 

As a player Shermond started basketball at a late age but quickly fell in love with the game and eventually landed at Saint Mary's College, where he worked and played with the Gaels. After college he played overseas in Hong Kong before transitioning into a coaching role in San Francisco-eventually leading him to Vancouver. Basketball has taught him many positive life lessons and he wishes to impart those lessons onto the next generation of hoopers

Growing up as a multi sport athlete at Vancouver college, Spencer was fortunate to play basketball for some excellent coaches and quickly found a passion for coaching himself. He has been coaching for 10 years for clubs across Canada and at VC. Spencer has a Kinesiology degree and Masters in Sport and Performance Psychology. Basketball has taught Spencer many valuable life lessons and he looks forward to helping young athletes develop the mental, physical and tactical skills necessary to improve their game at Split Second.

Jeremiah is a UBC Kinesiology student and certified strength coach with over five years of experience in basketball coaching and private skills training. He has coached at the collegiate level with Douglas College’s Men’s Basketball Program and specializes in developing youth players through team coaching and player development training. Jeremiah also ran youth basketball camps as part of UBC’s Active Kids program, focusing on fundamental skills and teamwork. His coaching philosophy emphasizes athlete empowerment, discipline, and a passion for the game.

Growing up in Vancouver, Josh was a multi-sport athlete who loved to play whatever sport was in season. At Kitsilano High School he was fortunate to have a talented group of athletes to share his passion. Basketball soon became the focus and other sports were used to prepare for basketball season. The learning opportunities and growth that came from basketball are tangible and something Josh enjoys sharing with the kids he coaches - learning to perform under pressure, manage emotions and understand the value of teamwork. Josh won back-to-back Provincial Championships with Kitsilano and was known as one of best shooters in the province.

Alireza began playing basketball at the age of 10 and was selected for Team Tehran. As a player, Alireza won 5 national championships, but after suffering two ACL injuries, transitioned to coaching. While earning a bachelor’s degree in sports science, he started coaching and led the U16 team to a national championship, as well as the U18 team to a third-place finish, along with multiple provincial championships across various youth age groups. Alireza is currently pursuing a Master’s in Coaching Studies at the University of Victoria. Alireza says basketball is much more than just a sport; it has instilled in me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of both success and failure in life.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Hidde was introduced to basketball at the age of 4. Growing up, there were very few days where you could not find him in the gym at his club team. Years of consistent practice and competition allowed Hidde to leave his home country, to go finish his HS Degree and play in Spain for two years. From there, his journey continued to playing college basketball for an NCAA Division 1 program for a year, and playing his last 3 years for Simon Fraser University in NCAA Division 2. One of his proudest achievements is representing the Netherlands at the Under 20 European Championships. Hidde is a big believer in ‘teamwork makes the dream work’, and is extremely excited to share his love and knowledge for the game with the next generation of players.

Jordan grew up in Seattle, Washington where he started playing competitive basketball at age 10. He is grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from many amazing coaches that taught him valuable lessons both on and off the court. Years of hard work and consistency allowed him the opportunity to play community college basketball for two years at Bellevue college in Washington state and then transfer to play two years at NCAA Division 2 Simon Fraser University. Jordan hopes to share his passion and knowledge of the game with the next generation.

Adriano was born and raised in Buenos Aires and fell in love with the game before he was old enough to even remember. What Adriano lacked in size, he made up for with passion, persistence and energy…something he brings to everything he does at Split Second. Adriano represented his club up to the pro level, as well as Argentina with the Jr National team. His path lead him to us in Vancouver where he combines his love of film, mentorship and basketball.

Moving to Kamloops at the beginning of high school from his home in Australia wasn’t easy, but Dave quickly found friends, a passion and a purpose by dedicating himself to basketball. All this work lead Dave to represent the South Kamloops Sr team and the BC Provincial team for all 4 years of high school. Dave went on to earn his degree while playing 5 years for the UBC T-Birds and 2 years for Canada on the Jr National team. After playing professionally in Australia, Dave returned to Vancouver to share his knowledge and passion with the next generation.

Born and raised in Victoria, Lauren began her basketball journey at 5 years old under the coaching of Eli Pasquale. Throughout her time at Oak Bay High School, Lauren also played for the BC Provincial team for 4 years and the Cadette/Junior Canadian National team for 3 years. Lauren then began her collegiate basketball experience playing for the University of Oregon Ducks for 2 years, one of which included an Elite Eight appearance. She spent the next 3 years playing at Santa Clara University Broncos while completing her degree, before moving to Vancouver to continue her education in a Masters program at UBC while mentoring the Split Second athletes.

Maddy is originally from Ontario where she played all her years of basketball. Upon a career ending injury, she took up coaching right away, and is now heavily involved in coaching at Split Second and as an assistant at Trinity Western University. Having experienced both the competitive side of sport and life after being an athlete, she most enjoys being able to develop people through basketbal

Coming from a basketball family, Jess was introduced to the sport at a young age. Jess attended York House School where she was able to play in four BC provincial championships, winning 3 silver medals, and 1 gold. She later played post-secondary at Concordia University and Langara College, then completed her BA and BEd at UBC. Basketball instilled a sense of community, leadership, perseverance, and a growth mindset. With limited club basketball opportunities for girls at the time she was growing up, Jess is excited to help increase opportunities for female athletes.

Cam grew up in North Vancouver and attended Argyle Secondary. As an undersized guard, Cam had to embrace the intangibles of dedication, leadership, and understanding the game to progress as a player. His proudest basketball achievement is leading the Argyle Pipers senior boys team in charges taken for three consecutive years, as well as the Capilano University Blues during his second year playing college basketball. Cam is also a basketball referee with over 1000 games under his belt in Canada and Australia. He hopes to help young players grow their love and knowledge of the game at Split Second.

Originally from Hong Kong, Bronson moved to Victoria at the beginning of high school. Although the transition to a new country was challenging, playing for a strong high school basketball team helped him make the adjustment, make new friends and stoked a passion for coaching. Bronson is currently doing year long internship with Split Second as part of his Sports Psychology degree in London, England.

Growing up a coach's son, basketball seemed like a way of life in the Scott family, with both older brothers also playing the game. Even though Tarik found success playing football, basketball was in his DNA. A strong high school career lead to representing BC on 2 summer games and provincial teams. Earning a scholarship to play for MacEwan University. After transferring to Brandon University and two ACL tears, he decided to transition from player to coach for his final years at University. Tarik is excited to share his knowledge to the next generation of players.

Born in Vancouver and raised in Richmond, Denise started her basketball journey at the age of 10. As an undersized guard with limited club basketball opportunities, her work ethic, determination, and love for the game landed her a spot at Langara College, where she is currently the College’s #5 career leader in points. She completed her BKin at UBC and recently completed her MBA through UNBC. Denise is passionate about community building and gender equity in sport, and she looks forward to supporting female athletes through their own athletic endeavors.

Coming from a sports-oriented family, Jessica was exposed to basketball at a young age. Growing up, she played a variety of team sports before choosing to pursue basketball at the next level. Jessica represented BC on the provincial u15 and u17 teams before continuing her basketball career at NCAA Division 2 Simon Fraser University. Redshirting and COVID cancellations extended Jessica’s student-athlete career to six years. Jessica looks forward to embracing the shift from player to coach by inspiring the next generation of female athletes.

Jess grew up playing soccer and decided to switch to basketball in grade 8. She played at West Point Grey Academy, where she was able to play in 2 BC provincial championships. Jess was also part of the Split Second Cobras team from grade 8 up until graduating high school. She now plays at Okanagan College in Kelowna, who recently won the PACWEST provincial championships and placed in the top 8 at CCAA Nationals. Having grown up surrounded by athletics, Jess understands the importance of exercise and hopes to help create opportunities in sport for female athletes.
