Community Day Fall 2024
A Celebration of Togetherness and Growth
Split Second welcomed over 500 players and parents to our annual Community Day this past weekend—we look forward to this event every fall and spring. It is always so much fun to see our community gathered together to kick off the season! It was a day packed with excitement, learning, and the opportunity for our players and families to connect with the SSB community on a deeper level.
Gearing Up for the Season
One of the highlights of Community Day is distributing the season's gear packages, which included our latest Split Second hoodies, backpacks, hats, and shirts. Seeing our athletes suited up is a powerful reminder of the unity we foster within our organization. Each piece of gear represents more than just team colors—it symbolizes our commitment to hard work, togetherness, and striving for excellence on and off the court!
Capturing the Moment
Professional photographer (and long time SSB coach) Josh Bowie was on hand, capturing portraits of our athletes in their new gear. These photos are now available for all families to enjoy! Click this FOLDER and download the images. Feel free to put them on social media and please tag Split Second.
Strength Testing and Injury Prevention
Our athletes had the unique opportunity to assess their physical abilities with vertical jump and peak power testing, thanks to the strength and conditioning experts from Saltus Athletics. This testing provided valuable insights for both players and coaches, setting a baseline for the season’s training goals.
Health and injury prevention are critical aspects of athletic development, which is why we were thrilled to partner with the experts from Treloar Physiotherapy. They led a session focused on ACL injury prevention, offering players and parents practical strategies to reduce the risk of injury. The presentation sparked thoughtful questions from attendees, highlighting the importance of proactive care in maintaining a long and healthy athletic career. Please feel free to reach out to Saltus and/or Treloar for your training and rehab/prehab needs this season!
Embracing SSB’s Core Values
At Split Second Basketball, our core values—Hard Work, Resiliency, Togetherness, and Commitment—are at the heart of everything we do. During Community Day, we took the opportunity to reinforce these values to both players and parents. Eric Butler addressed the importance of fostering these qualities as a foundation for success in sports and life. These are the values that guide us in every step of our team program!
A special moment came when Daniel Shashar, our new Director of Coaching and Player Development, took the floor to delve deeper into the core value of RESILIENCY. Daniel emphasized the importance of reframing frustration in sports, encouraging players to see it not as a problem to be solved but as a tool to help them improve. His message resonated with the players, reminding them that growth often comes from pushing through challenges and that frustration is part of that journey!
The Power of Community Support
Community Day also reminded us of the importance of the ongoing support from our valued partners, including Nicola Wealth Management. For several years, Nicola Wealth has been an incredible community partner, offering crucial financial support to players who might otherwise be unable to afford the tuition for a top-level basketball education. Their contributions have made it possible for many talented young athletes to access our training and development programs, regardless of financial barriers. Their support underscores the shared commitment between SSB and our partners to invest in the growth, development, and well-being of young athletes in our community.
Looking Ahead
Community Day isn't just an event to distribute gear or run through physical testing—it is also a celebration of what Split Second Basketball stands for and the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose was clear. We are so proud of our athletes, coaches, and families and there is nothing better than coming together to kick off another incredible season.
We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the day possible, from our partners at Saltus Athletics and Treloar Physiotherapy to Josh Bowie for the fantastic photos. And of course, thank you to the players and parents who are the heartbeat of SSB. We can’t wait to see the growth and success that this season will bring!
