2022 Year in Pictures

A huge thank you to everybody who made 2022 such a great year for our basketball community!

While the year started with a lot of uncertainty last January, we were really happy with the way things progressed and the growth our players showed. We had several thousand aspiring young athletes play in hundreds of games….both full court and 3x3….train for hundreds of hours throughout the year in practices, player development sessions, private training, classes and camps.

A big thanks to all our players for the hard work they put in…and parents for their support to make it all happen.

We can’t let this time of year pass without a massive thank you to all our coaches. We are so lucky at Split Second to have the coaching crew that we do. We have a couple dozen caring, knowledgeable, passionate young men and women who dedicate a big chunk of their lives to give our children a great basketball experience. Coaching is not easy, it’s not always fun, it’s rarely convenient…but it is something that our coaches do very well and with a ton of passion. Coaches, we really appreciate you!

The following are a few quick recaps of some of the programs Split Second ran throughout 2022. I have included a few pictures of each and have provided links to Google folders with many more images for any of you who want copies for yourself. Which brings me to thank both Josh Bowie and Paul Yates for their great work capturing your kids in action all year long.

BASKETBALL IMMERSION

Basketball Immersion is a fantastic new program where players in grades 8-10 get their afternoons off school so that they can train with Split Second and Oval HP coaches. Instead of taking PE, Woodworking, Drama or Home Ec, these athletes are taking the core academic studies in the morning and doing what they love during the afternoon.

We really appreciate the group we have for this inaugural year and thank them for all their efforts to improve.

Check out more photos here and go to https://www.splitsecondbasketball.com/basketball-immersion if you want to join for the second semester or next fall.

3X3 HOLIDAY SERIES

It’s safe to say that Split Second runs more 3x3 basketball than anybody else in BC. We think it’s a great way for players to get many more touches of the ball, work on their individual offence and defence…and just have a ton of fun competing.

Our 3x3 League runs on Sunday evenings during Fall, Winter (space available for the January to March session), Spring and on Tuesdays/Thursdays in the summer.

In Fall 2022, there were 2 events in our Holiday 3x3 Series, the Halloween Hoopfest and the Raining 3’s tournament. The final session on Family Day still has some space available. The Holiday Series tournaments have been a great success. Both Fall sessions were completely full, competitive and a really fun way to spend a day.

ACADEMY TEAMS

With one practice and one game each week, the Split Second Academy program is a great place for young athletes to get good coaching and competition. Every Friday night at the Oval, 10 Split Second teams battle against teams from Athelite, 3D and several other local clubs in the Swish League.

Watch for upcoming playoff action in the next few weeks and a new Academy season this Spring.

PEAK TRAINING

For athletes looking to play post-secondary basketball, the PEAK program at the Oval has been a great place to prepare. Several former PEAK athletes are now playing CCAA, Usport, and NCAA division 1 and you can check out our 2022 photos here

2022 CAMPS

Camp was back in full swing at Split Second this year with the majority of our camps completely full of players, competition and fun. With 40+ camps during Winter, Spring and Summer breaks and special guests like Jordan Lawley coming in, we have lots of different options for players to choose from. Check out camp photos here

SKILLS TRAINING CLASSES

Our Skills Training Classes are still one of the most popular ways for young athletes to get an introduction to basketball. Each week players do a deep dive into different fundamental skills and then work on applying them in competition and games at the end of class.

Whether it’s an introductory program for primary school kids, a girls-only class, or a more advanced option for older players, we have many different options each week. Check out some Skills Training photos here

COBRAS

It was fantastic to finally get our Cobra teams back to full season action for the first time since 2019. The Cobras are our top competitive teams and they compete in local and travel tournaments across Canada and the United States. Our teams had many hundreds of games and some fantastic wins in big tournaments and leagues in 2022.

Included in this were some great travel tournaments to expose players to different teams with different styles of play. Some of our travel highlights include playing games in Montreal, Calgary, Toronto, Kingston, London, Kelowna, Victoria, Spokane and Las Vegas. Cobra game action photos here

Cobra Community Day is a chance for our players to get their uniforms and gear packages, take team pictures and headshots, meet our community partners and do some physical competitions like vertical and speed tests. Players look forward to this every April and you can see our 2022 photos here.

Much gratitude to Nicola Wealth for their continued support of Cobras needing financial assistance. Their support made a world of difference for several players throughout 2022 who were able to pursue their basketball dreams. Thank you from all of us at Split Second!

The final step on the Split Second Pathway leads many of our players to post secondary basketball. We’re really proud of all our 2022 grads, including the following who are currently representing Western (Ontario), Concordia, Champlain, Camosun, VIU, Langara and Douglas College at the Post Secondary level.
