Split Second Basketball helps build COMPETENCE, CONFIDENCE and CHARACTER in hundreds of young athletes in our weekly skills classes and leagues. The most dedicated players, who are ready for even more focused training, are invited to our Cobra Program.

Our Cobra teams start at U10 (Grade 4) for boys and U13 (Grade 7) for girls. Our coaches are always on the lookout at our other programs to identify players whose skills, attitude, compete level and character make them a good fit to join the Cobras.

ABOUT THE COBRA TEAMS

The Cobra Program is Vancouver’s premier basketball training. We provide top level coaches to mentor players, teach them the little details of the game, and give them the training they need to be THEIR very best. We play games and tournaments to push ourselves against quality competition. We weave lessons of character development into everything we do.

The Elementary Cobra Fall/Winter program is designed for players in grades 4-7, it will run from mid September through to the end of March, with down-time (Open Gym only) during the school Winter and Spring breaks.

The Elementary Cobra Spring program runs from April through the end of June.

WINTER TEAM PAGES

HOW DO YOU BECOME A COBRA BEFORE TRYOUTS START IN HIGH SCHOOL?

  • For players in Grades 4-7 (U10/11/12/13), we do not run tryouts. Instead we identify players in our Split Second Programs and Leagues who meet our selection criteria as follows:
    • willing to work hard, listen and focus every practice
    • ready to learn in-depth team concepts and advanced defensive/offensive schemes
    • coachability, character, motivation
    • willing to work hard to improve their skills on their own and in our Cobra Open Gyms
    • skilled enough to play at a competitive level on a Cobra team
    • dedicated enough to prioritize Cobra training

If your child meets these criteria and you would like him/her to be considered, email Kevin@splitsecondbasketball.com

COBRA TRAINING INCLUDES:

  • 3 On-Court practices/week
  • 1 Strength + Conditioning/week with Saltus (except U10s)
  • Cobra Open Gyms (optional, but encouraged)
  • games/scrimmages/tournaments (3-4 tournaments in the Fall/Winter and 5+ tournaments in the Spring)
  • Uniform
  • Participation in the brand new Fall BCCBA League (see below)

BCCBA

The Fall BCCBA League, is a new initiative from the top basketball clubs in the Lower Mainland that will allow for multiple games against great competition locally! Together with five other top-flight clubs (Athelite, BC Bounce, Vancity, FYBA and 3D) we will be coming together for tournament level play without the long drive or hotel stay of an away tournament. Stay tuned for more info.

FAQ’s

WHAT IS THE “OPEN-GYM” TRAINING COMPONENT?

Access to an Open Gym is a critical part of development because it gives players the opportunity to get lots of time working on their individual skills, plus freedom to experiment playing in more casual pick-up games. Our Open Gym times will be limited to these serious players, and we expect it to be an important component of our Cobra program. During some of these Open Gym times, we will also provide opportunities for Cobras to train their Strength and Conditioning.

CAN I PLAY MULTIPLE SPORTS WHILE BEING IN THE PROGRAM?

Yes, in fact we encourage multi sport athletes and are okay with them missing a Cobras session to accommodate other important sporting events as long as they make every effort to attend our sessions when possible.

CAN I PLAY ON ANOTHER BASKETBALL TEAM?

We encourage kids to play on their school team. Our ultimate goal is to make them strong, confident players on their elementary, high school, university, provincial and national teams.

Because we give players ALL the training, conditioning, skill development and games they need,  athletes should not play with any other basketball clubs. Our experience has been that this can often lead to development of bad habits, conflicted loyalty and put young men and women in a difficult situation.

WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE IT TO PRACTICE?

Access to an Open Gym is a critical part of development because it gives players the opportunity to get lots of time working on their individual skills, plus freedom to experiment playing in more casual pick-up games. Our Open Gym times will be limited to these serious players, and we expect it to be an important component of our Cobra program. During these Open Gym times, we expect to offer some Strength and Conditioning sessions.

CAN I GET A REFUND?

The initial payment is non-refundable. We will be making commitments that require us to plan in advance. We need to know players are committed.

Exception: If a player has a major scheduling conflict that can not be resolved and notifies us before the end of September, we will put half the initial payment amount as credit for future Split Second programs.

If a player decides they can no longer continue with the Cobras, monthly charges will discontinue for all subsequent months.

If a player has a serious injury that requires him/her to take more than a few weeks off basketball, please inform us and we’ll suspend monthly billing during the injury period.
