ABOUT SPLIT SECOND BASKETBALL
HOW WE STARTED
Split Second is a basketball training organization started in Vancouver in 2010 by former university and professional player Eric Butler.
He was joined shortly after by his good friend (and former university team-mate) John Dumont.
Joey Vickery, after finally retiring from a decade with Canada’s National Team and 19 years playing professionally in Europe, joined Eric and John a couple of years later.
With 7 young kids between them, Dumont, Vickery and Butler set out to create an environment where these athletes could build great habits, learn life lessons and develop a love of the basketball.

OUR DNA
From day one, the core DNA of Split Second has been about serving the community and giving as much value as we can. We provide a top level curriculum and coaching at affordable rates, and have scholarships available for those in need. To create a superior learning environment, we keep our player to coach ratio low and invest in great coaches. The results speak for themselves as we have now coached over 3,000 young athletes and our impact is growing.
LONG TERM ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT
We believe in long-term athletic development. We are preparing athletes for long term success, not just to win a game next weekend. We encourage our players to be multi-sport athletes. We reinforce that getting good grades and playing for their school teams should be their top priority. Split Second is here to help make sure our players are high skill, high character athletes who will represent their school with pride.
COMMUNITY
We are creating a community of people who believe in putting fundamentals first and working hard to reach the peak of their potential. We’re looking for families who know that character development is one of the most important lessons their kids will take from sport. We’re looking for players who love playing and want to challenge themselves every training session and game. If this is you, please come and check us out.

JOHN DUMONT
Tragically, in late 2015, John Dumont was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
One year and one incredible battle later (John was a fighter like few ever seen), John was taken from us way too early. We miss him every day at Split Second Basketball.
However, we have vowed to carry on what John helped start and will make sure his message to kids continues to resonate and continues to grow.
Thank you John. We miss you.

HOW WE DO IT
1. WE SIMPLIFY
The Split Second Player Development System is the best way to simplify the complex process of developing an elite player’s skill set. We simplify by providing players with a straightforward, logical framework for elite level skill acquisition. The common thread throughout everything we teach is:

PERFECT ATHLETIC POSITION
(proper body position)
ALIGN YOUR SPINE
- back in a natural “s” curve
- shoulders back
- chest up, head up
SET YOUR BUTT
- feet slightly more than shoulder width apart
- all 10 toes pointing straight forward
- knees wide
SET YOUR GUT (engage main core muscles)
- transverse abdominus
- multifidus
- diaphragm
- pelvic floor
TORQUE
- engage muscles to externally rotate legs, hips and shoulders

COBRA
(proper hand position)
HANDS IN “T” POSITION
- fingers comfortably spread in shape of the ball
- thumbs parallel
WRINKLES IN WRIST
- absorb the ball with soft hands
- pull back wrist until wrinkles appear

2. WE REVEAL THE SECRETS OF WHERE EXACTLY THE GAME IS WON AND LOST
When you break down the game of basketball, you see that 40 minutes of game-play is actually just a series of many little battles like….passing in the post….or driving for a lay-up….or cutting backdoor…or releasing a jump-shot…or… you name it.
Becoming an elite player comes from consistently winning these little battles….but how do you do that?
(SECRET #1) Importance of a Split Second
The difference between winning and losing these little battles, executing successfully or not, inevitably comes down a few hundredths of a second. Understanding this is the first key to becoming an elite player.
(SECRET #2) DETAILS of Split Second execution.
While it’s great to understand the importance of quicker execution, what really matters is your ability to perform. Most players feel rushed as soon as they try to speed up. Attempting to execute quicker, without knowing the little details that matter most, is a recipe for frustration and failure.
Executing more quickly without rushing comes from being prepared ahead of time. This is why being in the READY POSITION (Cobra and Perfect Athletic Position) at all times is so crucial.
We explain the details of the best way to get in the READY POSITION…whether it’s from a pass, a square-up, jump-stop, reverse pivot, off-the-dribble, curling off a screen….and then how (GO) to execute as time-efficiently as possible.
(SECRET #3) Building Split Second habits
Understanding is important…details are key….but HABITS are absolutely VITAL! Your basketball game is the sum total of your habits, not the bits of information you know. We get you the quality repetitions and feedback you need to develop Split Second Habits.
3. WE DEVELOP CHARACTER AND CONFIDENCE
While players may come to develop their basketball skills, our goal is to make sure they leave with much more.
We believe that sports done RIGHT are one of the best ways to teach life lessons and values that will serve players for life.
We thoughtfully weave lessons of team-work, resilience, effort, focus and determination into every Split Second program because we believe these lessons are every bit as valuable as anything else we can teach.
We know that if players leave our program with a stronger character and more confidence, they’ll not only better at basketball, but also more complete human beings.
